Don't Let Small Obstacles Eclipse Your Long-Term Goals

Today I’d like to talk about the solar eclipse that came across our country earlier this year. It was an amazing event, and actually relates to another concept I’d like to share with you.

Recently, a total solar eclipse passed across the United States.

For a chance to see this amazing sight myself, I traveled with friends and family to the St. Louis area in order to be in the path of totality.

The weather that day was hot, the lines to get water were long, and everyone in the crowd seemed to be in a little bit of a bad mood. Up until the eclipse, we were all just a group of somewhat disgruntled individuals going about our own business.

However, things changed once the eclipse actually happened. It is the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen. If you’ve never experienced this, you definitely need to. This event occurs around the world semi-regularly, and it is absolutely worth seeing.

Don’t let small obstacles become bigger than your long-term plan.

It was really unlike anything I’ve experienced before. The sky went black, the temperature dropped, the wind was blowing, and animals began acting strangely.

Suddenly, we were no longer just individuals. In that moment we became a group, all experiencing an amazing event together.

Despite all of the differences we may have, these kinds of events can bring us together. It is truly heartening to know that we can all come together. This is the same thing that tends to happen in disasters such as the recent hurricanes, where people join despite their differences to help one another.

I can’t imagine what ancient people with a limited knowledge of astronomy thought of events such as these. Today, we know that the moon is much smaller than the sun, and is also much closer. Being closer to us is what allows the moon to block our view of the sun.

This is something we can relate to investing, too. Imagine that our long-term plan is the sun and that all of our little obstacles are the moon. Blips on the market that affect our market can eclipse the bigger picture of our long-term plans.

But, eclipses come and go. Don’t let small obstacles become bigger than your long-term plan.
